What with flights, airport transfers, ski hire and lift passes to book, ski holidays can often require a good deal of organisation. What’s more, there are so many resorts, chalets and package deals on offer that it’s hard to know where to start looking. Take the stress out of planning your holiday with these four top tips.
1. Finding a resort: One of the first questions to consider when booking your ski holiday is which resort will be best for you. If you’re a regular skier, you’ll probably have a good idea of where suits you most. If not, you’ll probably have to do a little research. Factors to take into consideration include the size of your budget, how far you are prepared to travel and your skiing ability. Beginners should look at resorts with plenty of green and blue slopes and a good ski school. More experienced skiers will need a variety of more challenging runs and possibly some off-piste terrain as well. Finally, if you’re planning to travel early or late in the season then go for a higher altitude resort to guarantee snow.
2. Booking accommodation: Your accommodation will obviously depend heavily on your budget, but there are also other factors to consider before you book. There are generally three types of accommodation on offer at most ski resorts: apartments (both catered and self-catering), hotels and chalets. If you’re travelling in a large group then a chalet could be the best choice, but couples and families may want to stick to hotels. Apartments are generally the cheapest option, favoured by students, young skiers and those on a budget.
3. Arranging flights: Coordinating flights and accommodation is a juggling act, so you should consider booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Shop around on comparison websites to find the best offers and try to get the most out of your holiday by arriving as early as possible and leaving as late as possible. If you’re taking ski equipment, it’s also important to check airline baggage policies to make sure you won’t be charged a premium.
4. The whole package: If the whole business of booking everything separately is getting you down, you may want to consider a package deal. Package deals are often cheaper than piecemeal booking, and they take the hassle out of the whole process as well. You should still give some thought to the resort and accommodation, and try to find a provider who offers the most appropriate package. You can often get the best deals by booking in advance – Alpine Elements, for example, advises its customers to book at least six weeks before departure to secure the best accommodation. Take a look at the Alpine Elements website to view their latest ski holidays – booking in advance can also help take the pressure off you, and therefore make the whole experience as hassle-free as possible.
